Frequently Asked Questions About Hajj and Umrah: Everything You Need to Know Before You Travel

13 July 2026Farha Travels

Planning a sacred journey raises many questions. To help Sri Lankan pilgrims travel with confidence, we have gathered the most common Hajj and Umrah FAQs in one place. Below you will find clear, up-to-date answers on rituals, rules, visas, vaccinations and costs so you know exactly what to expect before you travel.

What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?

Hajj is the greater pilgrimage, performed once a year during the days of Dhul Hijjah, and it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year. Hajj involves additional rites such as standing at Arafah, staying at Muzdalifah and Mina, and the stoning of the pillars. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide on Hajj vs Umrah.

Is Umrah obligatory?

Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. Scholars differ on Umrah: many hold it to be highly recommended (sunnah mu'akkadah), while others consider it obligatory once in a lifetime. Either way, it carries immense reward.

Is Hajj compulsory for everyone?

Hajj is compulsory once in a lifetime for adults who are of sound mind, physically capable, and able to afford the journey and support their dependants while away. Those who lack the means or the health are excused until their circumstances change.

Can women perform Hajj or Umrah without a mahram?

Yes. Saudi Arabia now allows women to perform Umrah and Hajj without a mahram, provided they travel with a licensed operator as part of an organised group. This is a visa regulation, not a change to Islamic law, so we encourage you to seek guidance from a trusted scholar on what is right for you.

What vaccinations are required?

A quadrivalent (ACWY) meningococcal vaccine is mandatory for all pilgrims aged one year and above. It must be taken at least 10 days before travel and within the validity period for the vaccine type. Seasonal influenza and other vaccines may also be recommended, so check current requirements before you depart.

What is ihram?

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Hajj or Umrah. Men wear two white unstitched cloths, while women wear modest ordinary clothing. In this state certain acts are prohibited, and the pilgrim declares their intention (niyyah) and recites the Talbiyah.

How long does Umrah take?

The core rites of Umrah, tawaf around the Kaaba, sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and trimming the hair, can be completed in a few hours. See our step-by-step Umrah guide for the full sequence. Most pilgrims, however, spend several days in Makkah and Madinah for worship, reflection and visiting sacred sites.

How long does Hajj take?

The main rites of Hajj span five to six days during Dhul Hijjah, as set out in our step-by-step Hajj guide. Complete Hajj packages usually run from two to four weeks, allowing time for travel, rest, and visits to Madinah before or after the pilgrimage.

Can you perform Umrah during Hajj season?

Umrah can be performed throughout most of the year. However, during the peak Hajj period there are restrictions, and Umrah visas are typically paused for a window around the Hajj days. Outside that window, Umrah remains open. Your operator will confirm the exact dates each season.

Which visa do I need, and what is Nusuk?

Umrah pilgrims apply through the official Nusuk platform, where registration is now mandatory for everyone. Accommodation must be booked in licensed hotels and documented on Nusuk before a visa is issued. Once approved, Umrah and Rawdah permits are also booked through the Nusuk app. If you are planning Hajj 2027, our guide on how to register for Hajj in Sri Lanka covers the official timeline. Farha Travels handles this process for you.

Is there a minimum age for Hajj or Umrah?

For Hajj, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah sets a minimum age of 12 for international pilgrims, and those aged 12 to 17 must travel with a parent or guardian. For Umrah, there is no minimum age, so children of any age may perform it, though an Umrah completed before puberty does not discharge the adult obligation later in life. All pilgrims under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Are there upper age or health requirements?

There is no strict upper age limit, but pilgrims should be well enough for a physically demanding journey involving long walks and crowds. Those with medical conditions should consult a doctor and carry sufficient medication. Our guide on how to prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually can help you get ready. Children may accompany their families, subject to visa and vaccination rules.

How much does Hajj or Umrah cost from Sri Lanka?

Costs vary with the season, hotel category, distance from the Haram, flight fares and package length. Umrah packages from Sri Lanka are generally more affordable than Hajj, which involves longer stays and additional rites. Contact us for current, transparent pricing tailored to your budget.

Can I combine Umrah with a visit to Madinah?

Yes, and most pilgrims do. While visiting the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah is not part of Umrah, it is a beloved and highly recommended part of the journey. Our packages typically include time in both holy cities.

What should I pack?

Bring your ihram garments, modest clothing, comfortable walking sandals, an unscented toiletry kit, essential medication, and your travel documents. A small prayer guide, a refillable water bottle and a light bag for the Haram are also useful. Our ultimate packing checklist covers everything in detail.

How far in advance should I book?

Book as early as you can. Hajj places are limited by quota and fill quickly, while the best Umrah rates and hotels closest to the Haram sell out during peak seasons. Early booking gives you more choice and time to prepare, spiritually and practically.
