Planning your first sacred journey? This complete Umrah checklist walks you through every step, so first-time pilgrims can travel with confidence and peace of mind.
Start With Your Documents
Your paperwork is the foundation of a smooth trip. Sort it early.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Saudi Arabia. Keep photocopies, and save digital copies on your phone.
The Umrah visa is now issued through the official Nusuk platform. In practice, Sri Lankan pilgrims apply through an approved agent who bundles the visa with hotels and transport. Since June 2025, your accommodation must be booked in licensed hotels and recorded on Nusuk before your visa is granted. Farha Travels handles this for you.
Health and Vaccinations
Saudi Arabia requires all pilgrims aged one and above to show proof of the quadrivalent meningococcal (ACWY) vaccine, as set out by the Saudi Ministry of Health.
Key points to remember:
- Take the vaccine at least 10 days before your arrival.
- Conjugate certificates are valid for 5 years; polysaccharide for 3 years.
- Carry the original certificate with your travel documents.
Check other seasonal advice with your doctor. Bring any personal medication in its original packaging, with a prescription note.
Understanding Ihram
Ihram is the sacred state you enter before Umrah, with simple rules on dress and conduct.
For men, ihram is two white, seamless cloths. Pack two sets, plus a belt and comfortable sandals.
For women, there is no fixed garment. Wear modest, loose clothing in any colour that covers the body. The face and hands stay uncovered during ihram, so leave the niqab and gloves aside for that time.
While in ihram, avoid scented products. Pack unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant.
The Packing Checklist
Keep your bag light but complete. Use this table as a quick guide.
| Category | What to Pack |
|---|---|
| Documents | Passport, visa copy, vaccine certificate, tickets |
| Ihram | 2 ihram sets (men), modest clothing (women) |
| Toiletries | Unscented soap, shampoo, deodorant, wipes |
| Footwear | Slip-on sandals, a small drawstring shoe bag |
| Comfort | Refillable water bottle, umbrella, light scarf |
| Money | Saudi Riyals in small notes, a travel card |
Pack a small day bag for the Haram. A power bank and a prayer mat are worth their weight.
Prepare Your Heart and Mind
Umrah is a journey of the soul, not only a trip. Preparation matters as much as packing.
Learn the steps of Umrah before you travel: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and shaving or trimming the hair. Read a short, trusted guide — such as our step-by-step guide to performing Umrah — or watch a simple walkthrough.
Memorise a few key duas, and keep a pocket guide with you. Settle any debts, seek forgiveness from loved ones, and set a sincere intention.
Before You Fly
A few final checks make all the difference at the airport.
- Confirm your flights and hotel bookings.
- Exchange some cash into Saudi Riyals.
- Download the Nusuk app and save your booking details.
- Share your itinerary with family back home.
- Keep documents in one easy-to-reach folder.
Arrive at the airport early. Wear comfortable clothes, and rest well the night before.
